In the world of natural growing, we don’t just "make compost"—we cultivate a living ecosystem. Every scoop of kitchen waste that heads to the bin is an opportunity to feed the soil biology that sustains our plants.
If you are looking to supercharge your garden’s health, there are two humble ingredients you should be championing: Bokashi bran or used coffee grounds (bokashi gran). They turn everyday food scraps into a high-octane soil conditioner that nature—and your garden—will thank you for.
The Bokashi Boost: Fermentation Over Rot
If traditional composting is "slow cooking," Bokashi is "pickling." Bokashi bran is wheat or rice bran inoculated with Effective Microorganisms (EM)—a blend of bacteria, yeasts, and fungi.
Unlike standard composting, which relies on oxygen, Bokashi happens in an airtight bin. This provides several massive advantages:
Nutrient Retention: Because the waste is fermented rather than decomposed by heat, it retains more of the original nutrients.
Pathogen Suppression: The acidic environment created during fermentation helps suppress pathogens and weed seeds, making your final compost cleaner and safer.
Versatility: You can compost things traditional piles hate—meat, dairy, and cooked scraps—without the smell or pests.
The "Leachate" Bonus: The liquid byproduct (Bokashi tea) drained from the bin is a potent, microbe-rich liquid fertilizer that gives seedlings a major growth kick (when diluted 1:100).
Is bokashi gran any different from bran?
When you add used coffee grounds to your Bokashi bin innoculated with microbes, you aren’t just getting rid of waste; you are creating a synergistic super-mix.
1. Accelerating the Breakdown
Coffee grounds provide a consistent carbon/nitrogen source that the Bokashi microbes love. By layering your coffee grounds with Bokashi bran, you ensure the beneficial bacteria have plenty of "fuel" to colonise the material quickly, speeding up the fermentation process.
2. Odor Control
Coffee is naturally deodorising. Adding spent grounds to your Bokashi bucket helps neutralise smells before they even start, keeping your indoor composting system pleasant and discreet.
3. A Pre-Digested Feast for Soil
Once your Bokashi bucket is full and fermented (usually after 2 weeks), the mix is "pre-digested". When you bury this in your garden, the soil microbes and earthworms can break it down almost immediately. You aren't just adding nutrients; you are inoculating your garden beds with a thriving community of beneficial biology.
How to Get Started
Integrating these into your routine is simple.
1.Collect & Cool:Daily.
Save your used coffee grounds in a container. Ensure they are cool before adding to your Bokashi bin to avoid harming the delicate microbes in the bran. Alternatively have a word with your local coffee shop. picking up one batch that is already pasturised makes sense.
2.Layering:As needed.
Add a layer of food scraps to your Bokashi bin. Sprinkle a generous handful of Bokashi gran over the top.
3.Compress:Every time.
Use a press plate or masher to push the material down, removing air pockets. This keeps the environment anaerobic.
4.Bury & Rejuvenate:Every 2-4 weeks.
Once the bin is full, let it ferment for two weeks. Then, bury the contents in a trench in your garden or add it to your main compost pile to finish the process. You can also create a purpose made soil factory. This is his is a box, large pot or composter that is only used for the purpose of introducing aerobic microbes to your anaerobic ferment. A layer of compost or soil at the bottom and one to cover the bokashi. Check back in a few weeks it will all be compost!
By moving away from simple disposal and toward a cycle of fermentation and renewal, you’re doing more than gardening—you’re building soil resilience that will last for seasons to come.
