Compost Mentis
Turning waste into wonder is a passion of ours. Here we created and mentored a community compost project in Walsall. Working with the community we programmed a pre-composting and maturation setup with the added function of worm composting to value add and create growing inputs from community waste.
The Tumbler
A useful teaching aid. Allowing us to demonstrate the 'stomach' composter. Tumblers represent a bioreactor that can be turned to foster the correct microbes, temperature and moisture for the magic to happen.
Humus
Creating carbon stable bio-complete compost to demonstrate the waste to wonder concept as well as the natural carbon organic matter cycling that is integral to our ecosystem.
Designing a system
Creating a efficient flow to the system was essential to having full engagement from users. It also allows us to demonstrate good working practices with risk assessing and record keeping.
Good, Better, Best
The greater the diversity of the inputs the greater the biodiversity of the compost. The particle size of feedstocks creates opportunities to improve the process and create a better product.
Supplementary composting methods
To compliment the main composting process we introduced both Vermicomposting and Bokashi composting to demonstrate other methods which suit different contexts.
Stability
Adding amendments like Clay and Minerals creates a more stable compost this means it oxidises slower and the carbon stays longer in our systems. This has been shown to slow down Co2 and Methane offgassing.
